This web site is intended to serve as a complete and self-contained submission for consideration for the 2007 Les B. Strickler Innovation in Instruction Award. Discussion related to the project and its alignment with Strickler criteria may be located using the content links located at the top and bottom of each web page.
This submission is made at two levels. The first level relates to the conceptual integration of solid pedagogical philosophies into a multi-disciplinary classroom gaming-structure that creates a dynamic and fun introduction to the principles of risk management. The second level relates to our actual application of those principles within the classroom setting. This program, the Risk Management Challenge (the Challenge), not only embodies the pedagogical principles espoused in the first part of the submission, but also incorporates a number of creative and technological applications that leverage those principles in creating a unique multi-disciplinary introduction to risk management.
Thus, while the Challenge serves as a vehicle demonstrating the potential application of the pedagogical principles described, we believe the true value of this submission lies in the versatility of application of the principles to a wide variety of classroom settings and participants
If this submission were to be selected as the winner of the 2007 Strickler Award, we would ideally seek to make a presentation that relies in part on our Internet-based resources because so much of this submission displays the creative use of available technology. However, given the typical constraints found in conference settings, we anticipate a PowerPoint-based presentation supplemented with examples of creative support materials used in the actual implementation of the Challenge, e.g. financial statements, colorful game materials, etc. The presentation would focus on our application of the principles of the Challenge and emphasize the broad applicability to other settings and courses.
